8 Ways to Find End Users to Buy Your Domain Name

A few years I wrote a blog post about how to find end users who could be potential buyers for a domain you are looking to sell. As a domain name broker I make a living from helping domain owners find a buyer for their domain name and the following is an updated & extensive list of the resources I use to find potential buyers.

The list is in no particular order of importance but each resource can provide varying amounts of results when looking for a company who may be interested in the domain you are selling:

  1. Google Images: Type the domain word(s) into Google and once you get the search results click on the word Images underneath the Google search box. The images search results may show you additional companies who use the domain word(s).
  2. DNB.com: This was previously called Hoovers and is a great resource for not only finding potential domain name buyers plus it provides financial information about those buyers too. Financial information is very useful e.g. no point trying to sell a 2-letter .com to a company that only has a $100k/year turnover.
  3. LinkedIn: A great resource for not only finding company names but also for finding relevant employees to contact about a domain purchase.
  4. YCombinator & Crunchbase: two more useful directories which will show you potential buyers if your domain word appears in the search results.
  5. DotDB.com: This website provides you with a list of all the domains registered with the keyword(s) used in the domain you are selling. And if you open an account at DotDB you also get to click on the domain extensions to see if there is a live website on that domain. Give it a try and you’ll see just how useful DotDB can be for your potential buyer searches.
  6. ccTLD searches: In addition to the DotDB searches, which will show what additional domain extensions are registered for your domain name, you can also do a manual search for all the main ccTLD’s. For example if you are looking to sell GetKeyword.com then visit the following ccTLD’s (Not an exhaustive list but you get the idea.) as they may all be potential buyers.
GetKeyword.net, .org, .us, .co, .io, .co.uk, .ca, .cn, .com.cn, .com.au, .de, .biz, .info
  7. Trademark Search: Not only is a trademark search a useful way to ensure you don’t try and sell Trademarked domains to the companies who hold them, but it can also provide you with additional information on potential buyers. In certain situations you may find companies who have registered trademarks with variations of your domain word(s) but not exactly. But you still need to be VERY cautious about approaching companies with Trademarks and if unsure then make sure and get legal advice first.
  8. Google search string: use the following search strings to search for existing businesses who have a domain name with the domain word in it. For example let’s say you have a domain name called ‘www.DomainWord.com’. Then potential buyers of that domain name would be those who have a longer domain name containing those words e.g. www.TheBestDomainWord.com or GetDomainWord.com or MyDomainWord.com
  • site: domain word.*
  • www.domainword.
  • “domain word”

These are the primary resources I use to help identify potential buyers of a domain name I am looking to sell on behalf of a client. And the search techniques are used mainly for keyword focussed domain names.
I use additional methods for identifying potential buyers for 2-letter .com and 3-letter .com domain names and I will tackle those additional methods/resources in another blog post.
